(For nellyk and Puisor, who said they missed me).
We all know that cutting a pattern on fabric should respect the grainline on the pattern. For wovens it is not difficult: we have selvages to guide us. But the knits??? Often you can not use the selvages, if you are not working with a stable knit like Ponte.
Single knits have curling edges, which make cutting with the correct grainline very difficult.
As matter of fact knits do not have a real grainline. But they do have single stitches which runs perpendicular to the crossline of the fabric, the single horizontal row of individual stitches.
From Linda Lee (Sewing Workshop and Craftsy) I learned to draw a line following the vertical line of one single stitch, which will be the direction of the grainline when I place the pattern on the fabric.
You follow ONE SINGLE STITCH in a vertical line.
Sometimes the prints are skewed on the knit fabric. Mostly on cheaper knits.
But sometimes they are not, which means that you can use a certain design as a guide. Like here.
You can draw the line for the direction of the grainline with chalk or with other markers.
I like to use a sliver of soap. Good old soap, which is replaced more and more by liquid wash lotions and other similar products.
First time I saw Lynda Maynard using soap to mark bias strips on silk charmeuse. I wanted to try this method too, but... no soap, because I had only liquid soap, hygienically stores in little bottles. Or stuff like that.
I remembered with regret all those slivers of soap which I have thrown away, because they were too small and too thin to be used. Especially one brand of soap could make me happy, if I could find it! I rememberd with regret a sliver of Dermacure-soap: green and rather hard. The brand disappeared completely or only in the shops where I looked for it.
For the sliver in the picture I had to wait some time. I tried to cut it, but it was too soft. It seams that you need a hard crust on the soap bar. Finally I shaped it as I wanted (how many times I washed my hands wishing it will "shrink" to a sliver as soon as possible).
Now I have it and I like it better than chalk. I use soap if the visibility of the mark on fabric is good.
The fabric cutting shears from Ikea are very good and much cheaper than other brands for excellent shears. You should try. Mine are 2 or 3 years old and still cutting very good. I do no think my KAY shears are much better.
I tried many knits, but noting beats the Dutch brand STENZO specialized in knits for children. This particular one is called ' Stenzo WINTER tricot' and can be found very cheap on line at HERBERT TEXTIL.

Very funny to see that the cheapest (3,95 Euro per meter) is the best. They have more expensive sale tricot, like the fabric with pink and green dots, you see above, which was Euro 7,95 or 9,95 per meter. I liked it less than the cheaper one, because it was thinner and with less recovery, although it was 96% cotton, 4 % lycra of something elastic.
I do not like cottons without or with very little recovery. They will stretch and never regain their original form again. Pity for the money you pay for something like that.
Unfortunately Herbert Textil does not have many nice designs. After they replenish their stock, the nicest knits are quickly gone. You have to check regularly to see what they have in stock.
If you find something you like, buy it, if you can. Nice quality and not at all expensive.
That's all folks.
Asta avui de spus.

Single knit, curling edges. Tricotaj simplu cu margini rulate.
